Among the non-military threats to the nation, next to terrorism, separatism and narcotics, it lists "the spread of LGBTQ culture".
So here is the national defence, deployed. Helicopter, armoured vehicle, twelve soldiers, one general with binoculars. Target: two men on a beach, holding hands and carrying a coconut.
Behind them, not on the list: a hillside on fire, a river mouth full of plastic, a scooter crash nobody attends.
A parliamentary commission chair called it "a disease and deviant behaviour". The forest is still burning.

One sentence, his own. Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.
The whole square throws. The mother, the schoolboy, the man in the helmet, the official in batik. Nobody stayed home. Nobody missed.
Same square, same crowd, every deportation video. The people commenting "clean this island" are the people burning the rubbish behind the warung, paying the officer, parking on the pavement and building without the permit.
He said "without sin". They heard "everyone".

So you iron the shirt. You find the tie. You are there at 08:55 with every document you own.

You bring the money. You build the villa. Everyone shakes your hand.
Year 1. The villa is finished. To rent it out legally you need an SLF, the certificate that says the building is fit to be used. You apply. "In process."
Year 2. "In process."
Year 3. Still "in process". An inspection arrives. Operating without an SLF: a fine, a seal on the door and a document with a number on it.
Year 3, the next day. A bulldozer for the villa. A van for you. Blacklist: up to six years.
The certificate takes three years. The demolition takes a day. In July 2025 they knocked down 48 buildings on one beach in a week.

The bule ruin the beaches. Bali was clean before the bule.
09:00. Two hundred people in white on the beach. A beautiful ceremony. Two hundred offerings.
11:00. Nobody. Two hundred baskets, plastic cups, incense sticks and flowers in the surf. The dog is the only one still there.
11:30. One foreigner with a bin bag. Three officers running at him. Cleaning up after a local ceremony counts as work, and work needs a permit. Nobody asked the two hundred people who left it there for anything.
The comments blame the bule. The beach says otherwise.

That is what the ten security guards are for. Ten men, ten radios, spread along two hundred metres, so that one buggy waits while the other crosses.

Downstairs: a pipe under the sea wall, a brown stream cutting through the sand, straight into the surf.
The local kids sit in it because it is warm. The tourist kid walks out of it brown to the chest. The waiter wades through it because that is the shortest route to the sun loungers.
This is not a rumour. On 1 August 2026 Badung's environment agency traced a pipe from a Berawa beach club's wastewater plant into the storm drain that empties onto the beach. They sealed it with cement and sent a warning letter. A permit says treated water goes into irrigation or infiltration wells, not the sea. Independent testing found E. coli above 1,100 MPN at Batu Bolong and Petitenget back in 2023. No swimming advisory was ever issued.
Everyone knows. The pipe got a letter.

Fine. Here they are. Cream silk, a four-figure handbag, suede loafers. Welcome garland ready.
One heel is in the drain. The other is next to a rat. The pavement ended two years ago and the rubbish is on fire.
Nobody with that handbag is coming back. Not because of the visa. Because of the street.

Nobody is asking anyone to skip their religion. We are asking why "ceremony" is the one word in Bali that ends every conversation — the pool pump, the delivery, the invoice, the fire.

Here is what that looks like on the ground at eleven in the morning on a Tuesday.
Three black SUVs, one with a trailer, crawling down the café street in Pererenan. Six men in black, black boots, black vests. One hanging out of the window with a megaphone. The rest walking table to table, pointing.
Around them: coconuts, surfboards, linen shirts, people who came here because a billboard told them they were welcome.
Nobody is saying immigration shouldn't do its job. We are asking whether the job needs a convoy, a megaphone and a trailer — or whether the point is not the checking, but the show.

The road is straight for fourteen kilometres. There is no right turn. There has never been a right turn. He is not turning right. He will, at some point, turn left — with the right indicator still on.
You've stopped on the verge to work out what he's about to do. He doesn't know either. He's never thought about it.

A pile of plastic bottles, bags, wrappers and a scooter tyre goes up in flames on the roadside. The smoke is black, oily and it goes everywhere — over the washing lines, into the kitchens, into the kids' bedrooms.
You walk over and ask, politely, if he could maybe not burn plastic ten metres from your house.
"If you don't like it, go back to your country. You have no business here."
Fair point. It is his country.
It's just that the smoke doesn't stop at the property line, and neither do anyone's lungs. His neighbours breathe it. His own kids breathe it. The only person who gets told to leave is the one who mentioned it.
His country. His fire. Everyone's lungs.

He's exempt.

You're on a scooter without a helmet. Fair enough — you shouldn't be.
A local pulls up next to you and starts shouting. Respect the rules. Respect us. F***ing bastard.
He is on a scooter. Without a helmet. With a cigarette in his hand. Behind him, a family of four on one bike, no helmets, and nobody is shouting at them.
He's not wrong about the helmet. He's just wrong about who the rules are for.
Nobody here is against rules. We'd just like to see one that applies to the person shouting about it.

#001 Five staff. One notebook. Zero burgers.

You ordered a coffee, milk on the side, and a burger. The waiter wrote it down. Read it back to you. Word perfect.
Forty minutes later, five people are reading that notebook like it's a treasure map. One is scratching his head. One brought a tray — and nothing on it.
Your table has a coffee. That's it.
This is not a bad day. This is the system: everything gets written down, and the writing is where it stays.
The burger may never arrive. The bill will remember it perfectly.
