INDONESIAUNMASKED
The magazine

About

Indonesia Unmasked reports on power, public money and accountability in Indonesia — for the people who live here, wherever they were born, and for anyone who wants to understand what happens after the press release. It is the first edition of Unmasked, a title designed to carry further country editions.

We cover the whole country. Bali, where many of our readers live, has its own page, but the magazine is not a Bali magazine and the front page is national.

What we do differently

Most news ends with the first headline. We open a case file and keep going: the status, what is established, what is still open, a dated timeline, and every promise an official or company has made with a note on whether it was kept. When a suspicion is later cleared, that appears in the same file as the original report.

We publish reader accounts — personal experiences prepared by the editors, with a note on what we could verify — and we say plainly what we could not.

Who writes this

Articles are written and edited by a small editorial team and published under the editorial byline "Editorial team" or an acknowledged pseudonym. We do not invent staff names, offices, partnerships or awards. What we can tell you about ourselves is on this page; what we cannot yet tell you is marked as such.

Images

Our illustrations are editorial artwork made for each story, with AI assistance, in a graphic style that is deliberately not photographic. Since September 2026 they are satirical caricatures: the target is the conduct or decision the article documents, never the victims of an event and never people mocked for their nationality. Every caricature carries a visible "SATIRE · AI" mark, also when shared on social media. Caricatures depict scenes and invented figures, never real identifiable people, and are never presented as evidence of an event. Photographs, when we use them, carry the photographer's credit and, where relevant, an "illustrative" label.

Languages

This edition is published in English, Slovak and Czech. Stories are written in one language and translated; a translation that is missing or older than the original says so on the page. Slovak and Czech editions of the magazine for other countries can be prepared by configuration and are not shown until they have real content.
